Spinal surgery treats medical conditions of the spine (part of the musculoskeletal system), where nonsurgical techniques have failed. When surgery is required, surgeons at NYC Surgical Associates select the least-invasive surgical procedure that will successfully treat the patient’s medical condition.
If a minimally invasive solution is not sufficient, our surgeons are trained in the latest surgical innovations and methods to perform any spinal surgery required using state-of-the-art technology. Our surgeon’s goal is to eliminate pain and restore complete freedom of movement and health to spinal bones, discs, nerve roots and other surrounding tissues.
The expert surgeons medical professionals at NYC Surgical perform a broad range of spine, orthopedic, brain, and pain management procedures, personalized and customized to each patient’s unique needs.
Disorders and conditions that may require spine surgery
Spine surgery is used to treat spinal tissue injury and bone deformity, degenerative disease, congenital disorders, trauma, sports injury, infection and tumors, including:
Bone Spurs – Excess bony growths, also known as osteophytes, that may crowd and irritate nerves, causing pain.
- Bulging, herniated, or slipped discs – Soft, shock-absorbing discs between the vertebrae that have moved out of position, leaked, become flattened or encroached into adjacent space.
- Lower back or lumbar pain
- Back pain – Mid to upper back (thoracic), neck (cervical) and arm/hand pain.
- Nerve pain – Pain and/or pins-and-needles sensation in the lower back, hips and legs.
- Pinched nerves - When surrounding tissues or structures compress a nerve along the spine, generally above the sciatic nerve root.
- Radiculitis– Pinched nerve, nerve irritation or inflammation.
- Radiculopathy– Spinal nerve root injury that has been neglected/untreated.
- Sacroiliac Pain - The sacroiliac (SI) joint is where the sacrum and the ilium are joined the spine’s base. The sacrum consists of 5 fused vertebrae. The iliac bones (2 large bones) make up the pelvis, with the sacrum seated in the middle.
- Sciatica– Irritation and compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttocks, down the legs and to the feet.
- Spondylolithesis– When a vertebra has slipped backward or forward.
- Spinal Stenosis– When the spinal canal is narrowed, causing nerve crowding, pressure, pain and other symptoms.
- Scoliosis – Congential abnormalities in the curvatures of the spine leading to pain and incorrect posture
Spine Surgeries performed at NYC Surgical– Simple repairs to complex reconstructions
Surgical procedures used to relief pain, numbness, weakness and tingling can include:
- Axial fusion– A minimally invasive technique to replace a worn disc.
- Cervical disc replacement - A damaged disc is replaced with an artificial, moveable disc.
- Coccygectomy– Coccyx removal to decrease or eliminate pain.
- Endoscopic Discectomy - A small camera and light (endoscope) guide the surgeon to remove painful disc(s).
- Endoscopic Foraminotomy - Camera-aided debris removal from damaged foramen (bone openings through which nerves pass) to provide more space and remove pressure from local nerves.
- Facet fusion- Placement of a spacer into the facet joint to stop pain.
- Interlaminar spacer – Insertion of a spacer to regulate the movement of a spinal segment.
- Microdiscectomy - Surgery using a microscopic lens to guide the removal of a portion of a deformed or damaged disc.
- Percutaneous discectomy– The most minimally invasive technique possible to remove disc material through a cannula, or tiny tube, inserted through the skin.
- Percutaneous release– A minimally invasive technique for relief from compressed nerves.
- Spinal Fusion– Placement of a bone graft between vertebrae to fuse them together into a single unit and help stabilize the spine.
- Transformaminal Interbody Lumbar Fusion (TLIF Procedure) Innovative surgical procedure used to stabilize the spinal vertebra and the disc between the vertebra.
